DoIP Explained: Diagnostics over IP for Heavy-Duty Trucks

The protocol quietly replacing CAN on new trucks — what DoIP is, which 2025+ platforms use it, and whether your current tools are ready.

For thirty years truck diagnostics ran on J1708, then J1939 over CAN. The third generation is here: DoIP — Diagnostics over Internet Protocol — running over Ethernet at 100 Mbit+. It's arriving first on 2025+ European platforms and electric trucks, and it changes the hardware you need.

Why DoIP exists

CAN-FD tops out around 5 Mbit/s. A modern truck's software update or full-ECU data dump is gigabytes — hours over CAN, minutes over Ethernet. As trucks gain ADAS, EV powertrains and over-the-air update capability, Ethernet becomes the backbone and diagnostics rides on it via ISO 13400 (DoIP).

Hardware implications

  • Your VCI needs Ethernet. Vocom II and TEXA Multihub 2 have it today; USB-Link 3 and INLINE 8 are CAN-era devices.
  • Cables change: OBD-to-RJ45 Ethernet leads replace Deutsch on DoIP ports — we stock them.
  • Software follows: diagnostic applications add DoIP stacks via updates — Jaltest, TEXA and PTT are furthest along.
  • Coexistence: trucks will run CAN and Ethernet gateways in parallel for a decade — your CAN tools stay relevant, but new purchases should be DoIP-aware.

What to buy today

If you're buying a VCI in 2026 for a 5-year horizon, DoIP capability should be on the checklist: Vocom II for Volvo/Mack shops, TEXA Multihub 2 for multi-brand. For everyone else, CAN-FD-capable hardware (USB-Link 3, INLINE 8) covers current fleets with years of runway — but verify your next purchase against this page. The RP1210 vs J2534 guide covers the rest of the protocol landscape.

Bottom line

DoIP is not a reason to panic-buy — it's a reason to check the spec sheet. Every adapter and platform page on this site lists DoIP status; we've done the tracking so the spec sheet means something.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need DoIP capability today?

Only if you service 2025+ Volvos/Macks, electric trucks, or Chinese new-energy platforms. For standard diesel Class 8 work, CAN/CAN-FD covers everything on the road — but buy DoIP-capable hardware on your next refresh.

Will DoIP make my current scanner obsolete?

No — trucks will carry CAN networks alongside Ethernet for a decade or more. Obsolescence risk is real only for tools bought today without CAN-FD, which new platforms already require.

What is the DoIP cable called?

Typically an OBD-to-RJ45 (Ethernet) diagnostics lead, or a direct Ethernet port on the vehicle side. We stock both patterns; the cable finder flags DoIP-equipped models.
